The health department plays a critical role in prevention and control of sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs), including HIV disease and AIDS. Prevention and control is based on: educating those at risk on ways to reduce their chances of getting an STD or HIV/AIDS; detection infected persons with or without symptoms who are unlikely to seek diagnostic testing and treatment.
