Environmental Health evaluate and inspect restaurants, schools, hotels, motels, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, adult and child day care centers and vendors at public temporary events for food safety. EH conducts site evaluations for design and permitting of septic systems and private wells and also review private sector submittals for permit issuance. EH staff perform inspections and investigate reports of raw sewage or other ground water contamination. Staff work to provide assistance and useful information to the public regarding their sewage disposal systems and private water supplies.

Inspects facilities that prepare food for public consumption, including but not limited to: restaurants, school cafeterias, licensed day-care providers, hospital cafeterias, and temporary food service units at events. Maintains a certified lead risk assessor on staff to conduct environmental lead investigations when indicated as a part of a work-up of a child with an elevated blood lead level. Provides permitting for onsite sewage disposal systems. Issues permits for single family home alternative sewage discharges jointly with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Permits all private drinking, heat pump, and agricultural wells. Monitoring wells are excluded. Permits and inspects hotels, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, and jails. Provides rabies prevention and illness outbreak investigation services.

Provides residents with comprehensive environmental health services such as septic and well permits, public food permits, regulation of public food establishments, tourist establishment, sanitation and restaurant applications. Investigates reports of food illnesses, working with businesses and citizens to educate and correct deficiencies.

Provides site evaluations and permitting for on-site sewage disposal (septic) systems and private wells, as well as regulatory oversight for private sector evaluations and designs in these fields. We provide health education to the community with regard to safe food handling practices, lead exposure, radon, rabies, and other environmental health concerns. We also inspect and/or permit daycare and adult care facilities, school cafeterias, restaurants, hotels/motels, bed and breakfasts, festival and fair vendors, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, and marinas. Additionally, we investigate animal bites and/or potential rabies exposures and certain environmental complaints.

Supervises licensing and bonding of septic tank contractors. Establishes fees and lot size requirements. Performs percolation tests, soil evaluation and small sewage plant inspections. Reviews site plans and inspects systems under construction. Issues permits for well construction. Collects water samples for chemical and bacteriological test; licenses and bond well drillers; inspects water supply systems and investigates complaints.

Performs soil evaluations for on-site sewage disposal systems and on-site evaluations for private drinking water wells. Provides periodic inspections of food establishments and temporary events. Performs Hotel/Motel and Bed & Breakfast inspections. Investigates food, on-site sewage, on-site well and food establishments complaints.

The Environmental Health team provide services in many program areas including permitting and inspecting of food establishments, tourist establishments, onsite sewage systems, and private wells. Investigate animal bites/rabies exposures and general environmental complaints. The Environmental Health staff also works to provide health education, oversight and information in a wide variety of other programs to the community.

Environmental Health Services protect the public's health by engaging in a wide variety of inspection, permitting, and testing services. It also assists animal disease prevention by dealing with concerns of rabies and conducting testing of possible rabid animals and educating the public on potential exposures.

Provides environmental and health services for area residents. This includes well and septic permits, food safety inspections, family planning, STD treatments, immunizations, communicable disease investigations, HIV/AIDS testing, care and supportive services, and women, infants and children (WIC) nutrition services.

The environmental health programs include lead exposure, food establishment inspections, rabies prevention, sewage and water permits and complaint investigations. Both nurses and environmental health specialists work together to investigate communicable diseases, including outbreaks.
