Host monthly Lunch & Learns to educate the public about important topics like suicide prevention, provide Mental Health First Aid to the community, provide Resource Guides to help those in need find therapy and resources quickly and easily, and bring together leaders from partner organizations to set community-wide goals to improve mental health access. Provides a variety of evidence based programs in school and community settings that are designed to address the prevention of violence and the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by youth. Partnerships with the school districts, YMCA centers and other youth serving organizations provide a variety of settings for the provision of services to a diverse range of children and youth. These services are designed to increase participants' skills and enhance their resiliencies to better cope with life's challenges and to help them succeed in school and other endeavors. Youth leadership skills are emphasized to encourage healthy youth development for all children and teenagers. Services are research based and evaluated. RAYSAC, the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition, is staffed by Prevention and sponsors many events and activities promoting drug free messages. A SAMHSA Drug Free Communities grant will provide coalition resources through 2010. The coalition's signature annual events are the After Prom Grand Finale in June and Red Ribbon Week in October. For more about RAYSAC go to www.raysac.org Prevention Planning Teams in Botetourt County and the cities of Roanoke and Salem meet regularly under BRBH Prevention Services leadership to gather, assess and analyze youth risk behavior data in order to identify areas of high risk behavior and plan prevention and intervention services tailored to local needs. Prevention staff are members of the Roanoke County Prevention Council, also a SAMHSA Drug Free Communities grant recipient, which performs similar functions and partners with RAYSAC in a variety of community events. Disaster Preparedness and Response includes the BRBH Crisis Response Team first mobilized to respond to the shooting at Virginia Tech in April 2007. Since that time these employees have received additional training in preparation for future local disasters. The role of "mental health responder has evolved over the last decade as more school shootings, the 9/11/01 attack and other disasters effecting large numbers of people have gotten public visibility and concern. This BRBH component is developing as resources become available and partnerships with other local emergency response organizations are institutionalized. Training and Staff Development provides education and training to BRBH employees and other nonprofit organizations. Training in new evidence based models, to meet licensure requirements, to enhance professional skills and to address performance issues is all coordinated through this component.

Prevention Services provide evidence-based programs & trainings focused on substance abuse, opioid/prescription medication misuse and suicide prevention. Prevention Services also work closely with community coalitions and community partner organizations to address these community issues. Prevention programs & trainings include: Mental Health First Aide, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's), Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training, Overdose Reversal Training (REVIVE), and Community Presentations on Resiliency and Life Skills Development.

Psychiatric and Nursing Services provides consumers with diagnostic assessments and evaluations, education regarding mental illness and medication issues, medication management, drug and alcohol screenings, prescriptions, medication administration, injections, lab work, consultations with other members of multi-disciplinary team, consultation and referral to outside health care providers. Psychiatric and Nursing Services also provides consultation to District 19 Substance Use and Intellectual Disability Services.

Provides a recovery support. NAMI We Care Augusta supports recovery by providing hope, encouragement and support to the community, including mental health services to consumers and family members. The group also provides education regarding symptoms, current treatment and therapies, community resources and alternative approaches to mental health. Free monthly educational meetings and family support group sessions are offered. Issues of awareness of mental health issues and reducing stigma are promoted through participation in community events.

Crisis services provides residents of Danville & Pittsylvania County, as well as those present in the area, with 24 hour a day crisis intervention to aid in the management of acute behavioral health problems. Also provides all prescreening evaluations for admission to state hospitals.

Office of Prevention develops, promotes, and delivers nationally recognized, evidence-based programs and services through a sustained comprehensive approach that incorporates home, family, school, and community environments. Prevention services and activities provide educational, practical, and meaningful experiences for youth, families, individuals, and organizations in order to enhance and improve positive life and social skills and to develop appropriate peer and community support systems.

Outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment services for adults, children, adolescents, and families. Services include individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy, parenting classes, psychiatric services, medication monitoring, crisis services, case management, home-based support services, substance abuse recovery services and intensive in-home services. Also provided at this site are Project LINK, an outpatient program for pregnant, substance-abusing women or mothers with dependent children. Service in Lee County is provided in partnership with Planning District One Behavioral Health Services.

Offers support groups and classes at no charge for those with a mental health condition and their family members.

In Our Own Voice is a 90-minute first-hand account of what it's like to live with a mental illness. Presenters humanize this misunderstood topic by demonstrating that it's possible-and common-to live well with mental illness.

VHBG's Therapeutic Resource Center provides counseling, consultation, and psychoeducation services to individual youth, families, and groups. All of these services are supervised by a licensed professional. These services effectively and directly meet the needs of youth and families served through VHBG and better mirror a youth's Individual and Family Service Plan (IFSP). VHBG provides a Youth Mental Health First Aid USA eight-hour public education program free to the community each month. This program introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with youth (teachers, school staff, coaches, church and youth group leaders, parents, social workers, hospital staff, law enforcement, employers, etc.). The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is primarily focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth, ages 12-18. The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorders.

Advocates for legislation that supports people with mental health conditions and their families. The focus is on prevention, early identification and intervention, access to integrated care, and insurance parity for people with mental health conditions.

The primary goal of the Behavioral Healthcare programs is to promote maximum independent living in the community for persons with serious mental illness or substance abuse problems, thereby preventing unnecessary, restrictive institutional placements.
