An additional warming shelter will be opened January 26 and 27 from 10 AM to 4 PM at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church located at 35 North Main Street, Rocky Mount, VA. ######################################################## Franklin County, Virginia residents should be advised that a warming shelter is available at: Scruggs Volunteer Fire and EMS Station located at 2130 Bluewater Drive, Moneta, Virginia. The County will open warming centers as needed. The centers will initially open when residents report power outages or when large-scale outages are observed. The warming centers will be located at:
  • Ararat Fire Department
  • CCDF Fire Department & Rescue Squad
  • Jeb Stuart Rescue Squad
  • Meadows of Dan Fire Department
  • Patrick Henry Fire Department
  • Smith River Rescue Squad
  • The Rotary Building (if additional space is needed)
Should overnight accommodations become necessary, the County will transition the centers into full shelter mode. Overnight shelters will be available at:
  • Jeb Stuart Rescue Squad
  • Meadows of Dan Fire Department
  • Smith River Rescue Squad
  • The Rotary Building (if needed)
Food: No food will be provided by warming center locations, but you are allowed to bring in food. If you have the need for special foods (Ensure, etc.) you may bring them with you. High-energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix, and other snack foods may be a good idea if you get hungry in between meals. If necessary, bring special dietary foods--such as diabetic, low salt, liquid diet, baby food, and formula. Medications: Medications - clearly marked with your name, dosage, type of medication, and prescribing physician. You must be able to take all medications by yourself. Pets: Pets are not allowed at fire/rescue centers. Rotary will be set up for domestic pets. Miscellaneous: Bring a cell phone and any other items, along with charging cables, as you will be able to recharge these items. Not Allowed: alcoholic beverages or weapons. Smoking is not allowed in centers.

The County has additional overflow shelter capacity that can be activated as needed based on conditions and demand. Shelter day programs will remain open during the storm, providing access to hygiene facilities, warm meals, and other essential services. Washington County Emergency Services and the Sherriff's Office are partnering to open a limited Warming Shelter starting at 1 pm today. The shelter will be located at the Hayters Gap Community Center at 7720 Hayters Gap Road, Abingdon, VA 24210. The shelter will provide cots, some basic food, and water; with the shelter closing at 10 am on Tuesday, January 27th. VDoT is working now to clear secondary roads to the community center. If you are out of power and plan to stay overnight, bring any medications you take with you. The Community Center does not have cell service. If you need a ride to the center, please call 276-676-6000.
Carroll County Warming center/charging shelter open Sunday, January 26, from 10 AM to 5 PM at the Lambsburg Community Center, 130 Learning Lane, Lambsburg. A kitchen and outlets for charging devices will be available for use Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church will also have a warming shelter open at the church, located at 203 Virginia Street in Hillsville. RoCo Alert is a system used by Roanoke County public safety officials to deliver emergency notifications to residents and businesses impacted by, or in danger of being impacted by, an emergency or disaster. The RoCo Alert service is provided by Twenty First Century Communications, Inc. under contract to Roanoke County, Virginia. Officials within the Roanoke County Emergency Communications Center can activate RoCo Alert when needed for wide area disasters such as wildfires or storm damage and also for very local alerts for flooding or neighborhood emergencies.
